About Me

As a tutor for three years at the University of Edinburgh and a lecturer for a year at the University of Chester, he taught classes on a range of themes (from witchcraft to youth culture), periods (from early modernity to contemporary history) and places (from Europe to the Caribbean). ‘Adrian's tutorials’, a student at Edinburgh wrote, ‘were always something to look forward to. He is engaging and funny, and he is very good at challenging student responses in order for us to get the most out of the lesson’. Whilst able to adapt to very different courses, his teaching always hones critical thinking by taking into account key facts and evidence; connected thinking by engaging with wider debates; and creative thinking by interpreting the past in new ways. He also worked as a writing tutor at Edinburgh, teaching students how to read and write for argument and boosting their grades in the process. Such skills are more important than ever given the difficulties many had with long-form text and increased pressures on their attention. Crucially, they are also transferable, providing them with the skills needed for life beyond the classroom and future employment.
