SEN – special education tutoring — learning design & executive function support

At SEN Specialists we combine research‑informed learning design with specialist SEN tutors and dedicated executive‑function coaching. Every child is paired with a Specialist SEN Learning Designer and a subject tutor so lessons are personalised, sequenced and practical — improving confidence, organisation and exam performance for KS2, KS3, KS4 (GCSE/IGCSE) and twice‑exceptional learners.

Why SEN learning design matters

Effective SEN support depends on deliberate learning design, not ad‑hoc tuition. Our Specialist SEN Learning Designers translate assessments and school reports into sequenced, measurable learning plans that reduce cognitive load, build metacognition and embed spaced retrieval. Tutors deliver lesson‑by‑lesson teaching while learning designers monitor progress, adapt scaffolds and coach tutors on neuro‑affirming strategies. This dual‑role model (tutor + learning designer) produces faster, more durable progress for students with dyslexia, ADHD and autism than tuition alone.

Executive Function Skills: embedded and standalone

Executive‑function skills (planning, organisation, working memory, task initiation and self‑monitoring) are taught both within subject sessions and as targeted coaching. Learning designers map small, achievable EF goals into weekly plans so tutors practise strategies during real English or maths work. For students needing intensive support we provide standalone EF coaching: step‑by‑step planners, Pomodoro routines, visual timetables and metacognitive prompts that transfer directly into classroom and exam performance.

Research & evidence (short bullets, with links)

  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) supports multiple ways of accessing, engaging and expressing learning — used across our programmes (UDL overview).
  • Cognitive Load Theory: sequence and scaffold to protect working memory.
  • Retrieval practice & spacing: planned repetition builds durable memory.
  • Metacognition: explicit teaching of planning and monitoring increases independence.

YSEN Case Study – Year 9 student struggling to start text‑based essay questions (GCSE prep)

Student: Year 9, age 14 — struggles to start text‑based essay questions; working memory and planning difficulties; anxiety when facing open‑ended tasks.

Assessment & goals: The Specialist SEN Learning Designer completed an intake and baseline writing task.

Goals for 8 weeks: (1) produce a coherent paragraph plan within 7 minutes, (2) start an essay response within 10 minutes of reading the question, (3) use metacognitive checklists to self‑edit basic structure and argument

.
Learning design & intervention: The learning designer created a scaffolded essay‑start toolkit: a three‑step prompt (Identify: key task words; Plan: 3 bullet points; Link: thesis sentence), visual planning templates, and a timed starter routine (2‑minute rapid note, 5‑minute paragraph plan). Executive‑function strategies (externalised checklists, a visible timer, and Pomodoro warm‑ups) were embedded into each session.

Tutor role: The tutor modelled the three‑step prompt using worked examples, then guided gradual fading: from co‑constructed opening paragraphs to independent timed starts. Each lesson included spaced retrieval of the toolkit and short reflection prompts to build metacognitive awareness.

Outcomes (8 weeks): The student began producing a clear paragraph plan in under 6 minutes and could start a full essay within 9 minutes in 80% of timed practices (baseline: 0%). Their GCSE practice essay marks improved by one grade band on average; anxiety around essay tasks reduced and classroom participation increased.

Why it worked: bespoke learning design, executive‑function coaching, scaffolded essay toolkit, timed practice, metacognition — all grounded in SEN special education best practice.
